Description

Manaus Octocil is a very effective aquarium medicine against intestinal flagellates and hole-in-the-head disease in aquarium fish. This product is also the most suitable medicine for treating community aquariums with many different fish species. All shrimps tolerate the medicine well.

Octocil may cause discoloration of the aquarium water.

The main advantages of Manaus Octocil:

  • Effective treatment against intestinal flagellates:
it effectively combats intestinal flagellates such as Cryptobia, Hexamita, Protoopalina, Spironucleus and Trichomonas.
  • Treatment of hole disease:
it is effective against the causative agents of hole-in-the-head disease, which, as the name suggests, is often associated with lesions or pits in the head, particularly in cichlids (such as discus fish).
  • Systemic action:
the active ingredients penetrate into the fish’s blood, effectively and systematically combating parasites.
  • Good tolerability:
Octocil is generally well tolerated by most fish species.
  • Preventive use possible:
it can be used preventively in quarantine aquariums for new fish, and in the breeding of discus fish and other cichlids to obtain flagellate-free fish stocks.
  • Easy to dose and apply:
with the clear instruction it is easy to determine the correct dosage and administer the medicine. It is usually administered as a one-time treatment.
  • Long shelf life:
even after opening, the product has a long shelf life of 5 years.

Signs and symptoms of internal flagellate or hole disease:

Indications of an infection with these parasites include:

  • White, slimy stool:
this is one of the most typical symptoms.
  • Weight loss:
the fish loses weight even though it may still be eating.
  • No or reduced appetite:
in later stages of the infection the fish may stop eating.
  • Dark discoloration:
especially in cichlids, such as discus fish, a dark skin color can be a sign.
  • Shy and withdrawn behavior:
the fish may start to hide and become less active.
  • Swollen abdomen:
in some cases a swollen abdomen may occur.
  • Holes in the head:
in advanced infections, especially in cichlids, this is a secondary symptom that may occur.
  • Spitting movements:
sometimes the fish can make spitting movements.

When recognizing the above symptoms, it is important to treat the fish quickly to prevent further weakening of the animals by the parasites. If possible, confirm the diagnosis with the aid of microscopic examination.

Dosage and use

Standard dosage:
Preparation: it is recommended to perform a 50% water change on day 1, before starting the treatment.
1st day: 1 ml per 20 liters of aquarium water.
On day 6 the treatment is complete, large water change of at least 80%.

Important:

  • During the treatment, the aquarium filter must remain switched on.
  • The water temperature should not exceed 29 °C.
  • Calculate the exact volume of your aquarium (water only).
  • Dispense the correct amount using the measuring cap provided.
  • Do not overdose!
  • Octocil should not be used in combination with other medicines.
  • Remove activated carbon or nitrate resin from the filter during the treatment, as these can affect the effectiveness of the medication.
  • Ensure sufficient aeration of the aquarium during the treatment.
  • Ensure good water flow so that the medicine can be optimally distributed in the aquarium.
  • The water quality must be good before using this product. It is advisable to change 20 – 25% of the water every week and to regularly vacuum the bottom.

*Always consult the product leaflet before use.

After 2 – 3 days of starting the treatment, a progressive recovery occurs. For the success of the treatment, it is then important that the animals resume their food intake, so that the gastrointestinal tract of the sick fish becomes active again.
By including food in the treatment water, the medicines reach the pathogens even better.
The symptoms may disappear in the days after the end of the treatment. If the treatment has not helped sufficiently, the treatment can be repeated after a break of one week in persistent cases.

In exceptional cases, water clouding occurs during treatment due to bacterial growth and associated oxygen deficiency. In that case, the treatment must be interrupted with a large water change of 80%.
